Eurovision Song Contest

Jahn Teigen has participated in the Norwegian Eurovision Song Contest a total of 14 times.
Four times he has gone to the top here at home, and represented Norway three times in the final. Here is what is known gone both up and down, although paradoxical was the first "failure" which was turned into success and really gave impetus to the career of Jahn.

1974 "HVOR ER DU" (3:03).
This year, a total of 272 songs was made for the Norwegian ESC final. A jury consisting of 3 persons picked out 5 songs that were to participate in the Norwegian final. All the songs were to be carried forward 2 times, including No. 1 artist performed the contribution of small orchestra, while No. 2 artist performed the song with NRK's major orchestras. Jahn performed the song "Hvor er du" with a small orchestra, while it was Olivia Newton who performed the tune with a big orchestra. The song came on 1 place with 48 points. However, it was Olivia Newton who was chosen to perform the melody in the final with full orchestra. The reason for this was probably that Olivia Newton was married to the composer of the song. The finals went to England and there was a 14 places of 17 participants. The song was written by Frode Tingnæs and Philip Kruse. This was Jahn's first participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, and one of the two songs that have not been recorded on the disc.

1975 "KJÆRLIGHETENS UNDER".
As the years before there were 5 songs in the Norwegian ESC final. All songs were previously performed 2 times. Artist No. 1 performed with a small orchestra, while No. 2 artist performed the song with NRK Orchestra. Jahn also performed in its contribution with small orchestra. The song was No. 2 in the Norwegian final. It is written by John Finsnes This song was never recorded on any disc.

1976 "VOODOO" (3:05).
This year it was on a par with the previous year 5 participants in the Norwegian ESC final. All final songs were performed 2 times with different artist, as well as small (Popol Ace) and large orchestra. For the first time it was not an "open" competition where all the artists to submit their contributions, but a competition where organizers had only inbydt known artists to participate. Jahn performed 3 different contributions with small orchestra, and in addition also "Voodoo" with a large orchestra. The songs called "hurry", "Always a breeze" and "Voodoo". Placements were respectively 3 and 4 sites, while the Voodoo came on a 2 place. The song "Voodoo" was a duet, and remembered NOK best from the performance with Inger Lise Rypdal with large orchestra, where Jahn lined up on stage in sjelettdrakt. This performance was also released on single. On "Voodoo" songs Jahn referred to both versions. Version 1 with a small orchestra, he sang along with Gudny Aspaas. The song is written by Terje Rypdal, and produced by Ola Johansen and Arve Sigvaldsen.

1978 "Mil ETTER Mil" (3:04).
This year was the Norwegian ESC once again an open competition where anyone who wanted to send in contributions. Total of 650 contributions were sent in to compete for the final 8 spots. Jahn participated with the song "Mil etter Mil" which was translated by Kai Eide, and produced by Tore Syvertsen. David Cooper and Kai Eide wrote "Mile after Mile" together in David Cooper's home in 1976. The song won the Norwegian final. In the international final in France Jahn had 0 points, finishing last with 20 plass.Dette was the worst ever position of Norway in Eurovision Song Contest.Jahn exploited, however, all mediapublicity he received after his historic bad placement, and managed to turn the loss to win. Mil etter mil was a great success here at home in terms of record sales and Teigens popularity. The single was released in both English and Norwegian.

1980 "JA" (2:40).
This year there were 10 songs in the Norwegian final. All the songs were written by direct Invitor composers, known from the music scene in Norway. Final was one of the most diverse ever in Norwegian history, with everything from jazz, rock, pop ballads and Eurovision Song Contest. "Yes," came on a last place in the Norwegian final. The song is written by Herodes Falsk and Jahn Teigen, and produced by Tore Syvertsen.

1982 "ADIEU" (2:21).
This year, NRK help of a British "expert" who would teach them how to create a winner in the International Eurovision Song Contest. Our two "losers", Jahn Teigen and Sheer, was Invitor as "test cloths" for what this expert could achieve. However, there was only Jahn who agreed to participate. The tune, "Adieu", was this year presented to the viewers already 7 months before the Norwegian final. The song was performed by Anita Skorgan and Jahn in the first direct-broadcast TV for many years. The audience was the jury this year. "Adieu" came top in the Norwegian final of 10 participants. In the international final in England was "Adieu" in 12 sites of a total of 18 participant countries. The song is written by Herodes Falsk and Jahn Teigen. It is produced by Jahn Teigen.

1983 "DO RE MI" (2:56).
This year also participated in 10 songs. 5 of the invited composers who had not participated in the Norwegian ESC earlier. In addition, the 480 contributions to fight for the remaining 5 spots in the open competition. Of these, 480 managed Jahn to be chosen with his song, "Do re mi". Basically, it was Wenche Myhre, which was launched as a soloist for "Do re mi", and with them she would probably have had Jahn, Anita Skorgan and three other girls choir in the background. Wenche Myhre should also perform a song in the German Eurovision Song Contest finals, and a German decision made it impossible to attend the 2 countries at once. Finally they got a deal where Wenche Myhre could sing the backing vocals on "Do re mi", while she still could be the soloist in the German finals. "Do re mi" won the Norwegian final with Jahn as a soloist. Wenche Myhre came in 5 place in the German final, and could thus have represented Norway in the final. For unknown reasons it was decided to send the "original the performance" of Germany by Jahn as a soloist. The song came on a 9 space of 20 participants. The song is written by Jahn Teigen, Anita Skorgan and Herodes Falsk. It is produced by Anita Skorgan.

1988 "GLASNOST" (3:00).
The preparations to this years Eurovision Song Contest started late last year. It was set up 8 qualifying finals where each finale included a song from an inviting composer and a song from open participants. Jahn was this year invited to participate. The 4 winners from the qualifying finals were directly qualified for this year's finals among 10 current songs. Jahn won his part-final with "Glasnost" under the program "Lør-Dan". This program aired on NRK, and the public could vote for their favorite of the 2 melodies. Jahn was super favorite this year with his song "Glasnost", but unfortunately ended up in the end on a 2 place. The winner was the song to Jahn Teigen's former wife, Anita Skorgan. Glasnost is written by Jahn Teigen and produced by Rolf Løvland.

1989 "OPTIMIST" (2:54).
This year there was still something new in the Norwegian ESC. The various record companies were asked to promote the candidates where artist, melody, lyrics and arrangements were completed prepared. 30 songs were submitted for NRK, and 9 songs were participating in the final. Of these 9 tunes to 3 melodies move on to a super final for the first juriavstemning. When the audience discovered that the Jahn with his "Optimist" had not come with the super-final, they clearly expressed their dissatisfaction. They began to arch, pipe and shout "Teigen" "Teigen", and program leader was about to lose control of the situation. After a while things calmed down, and the program continued. Jahn came on a 4 place with 5 other songs. Optimist is written by Jahn Teigen, K. Meine and O. Borøchstein. It is produced by Rolf Løvland.

1990 "SMIL" (2:54).
As in the previous year was the Norwegian ESC is not an open competition. Only the record companies, music publishers and composers organization had the opportunity to exhibit with candidates. 96 songs were received, and 10 songs were selected to participate in the final. Jahn surprised at all that he secretly had Anita Skorgan and Carola to set up the chorus of his song "Smil". Also this year there was a super finale, where 5 of the 10 songs would participate after the first voting. "Smil" went on to the super finals and ended up at the end of a 2 place. It was however more popular than the winner in retrospect. The song is written by Nora Buraas and Ove Borøchstein. It is produced by Jahn Teigen and Bjørn Ole Rasch.

1993 "JACKPOT" (4:03).
This year should be appropriated "good old days", and the audience was asked to dress up in the tides clothes during the final. As several times earlier this year NRK had problems getting good melodies and established artists to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. Participants in the final was reduced from 10 to 8 The participants in the finals was mostly "familiar faces" from the previous Eurovision Song Contest finals. Jahn came last with his tune "Jackpot" which is written by Jahn himself. It is produced by Tore Syvertsen and Jahn Teigen.

1994 "GI ALT VI HAR" (2:51).
This year, it is uncertain how the 10 final songs have been chosen. The quality of the songs were declining, and not less than 7 of the final participants were unknown artists. The last 3 participants were the Norwegian ESC final veterans with Jahn at the head. For the first time since 1977, the songs made known to the public before the final. A portion of the vote went through Norwegian Tipping, where people could betting on the winner. Jahn came on a 5 spot with "Gi alt vi har." The song is written by Geir Rønning.

1996 "ARIEL" (2:59).
The Norwegian ESC final in 1996 would be a "vorspiel" before the major international final in Bergen. Instead, it was a real downturn in which 8 songs competed. The entire finale seemed like a low budget project, and was conducted as a studio production. 400 songs had been submitted to compete for the final 8 spots. Some well-known artists participated, and 7 of the final participants had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest earlier. It was possible to vote for the songs before the finale, and the biggest favorite was Jahn Teigen and Øystein Wiik as 2 Tenors. They would perform the song "Ariel". They ended up, however, as No. 4 The song is written by Sverre and Øystein Wiik.

2005 "MY HEART IS MY HOME" (3:00).
The Norwegian ESC final in 2005 is Jahn's 14 time. This year there were 8 final songs that would compete for the first place in Oslo Spektrum. There were songs of all varieties. Jahn chose a ballad called "My heart is my home". This song was one of my favorites. When the 8 final songs were performed would 4 of them go on to a so-called super-final and then to the vote. Jahn ended at 4th place with "My heart is my home". Melody by: Jahn Teigen and Anita Skorgan. Text by Jahn Teigen, Anita Skorgan and Jan Vincents Johannessen.
